Hawks edged Ice Wolves to sweep home-and-home

The Hawks success this Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season against La Ronge continued Saturday with a 5-4 Nipawin win at the Jonah Roberts Memorial Community Centre over the Ice Wolves.

Trying to follow up Friday’s home ice win over La Ronge, the Hawks had to hold on until the final buzzer to earn a seventh win over the Ice Wolves this season.

Jack Janzen opened the scoring with his 11th goal of the year, the 19-year-old Martensville, Sask. product bookended the scoring notching the winner late in the third period as well. Sean Shiels also scored twice in the win. The rookie forward from Saskatoon, Sask. said the game wasn’t perfect, but the two points are valuable.

“Yeah, it’s good to get a winning streak going,” the 18-year-old said after the game. “We were down 3-1 in the second and I knew we needed to get a goal and get the momentum back. They were hounding us, but it was good to get going again.”

The Hawks trailed 2-1 after the first period, La Ronge went up by two before Finley Radloff cut the lead to one and Shiels tied it. Shiels second of the game came in the third adding to an impressive week. Shiels compiled three goals and five assists in four games this week. He said alongside Mason Karakochuk and Eric Hoiness, the line is a threat every shift.

“I am hot right now, I have my confidence up, it’s good. The timing is good to with playoffs coming up,” Shiels added.

Colten Scott earned his 10th win for the Hawks in goal making 29 saves.

Nipawin will put their three game winning streak on the line Tuesday against the visiting Battlefords North Stars. The Hawks are three points back of the North Stars for second place in the SJHL standings. Shiels said the matchup will be the biggest of the year to date.

“Four point game, it’s a big game because we want to get to that two spot for sure,” he concluded.

Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
