Nipawin Council approves new whistleblower policy

The Town of Nipawin has developed a whistleblower policy. 

Council approved the policy at Monday night’s meeting. 

Chief Administrative Officer Michele Sorensen told northeastNOW the policy provides a framework for reporting wrongdoings. 

“Individuals often feel uncomfortable reporting concerns for fear of reprisal or retaliation,” explained Sorensen. 

The policy is designed to ensure that people can report wrongdoing without fear of disciplinary action. Sorensen said it provides a clear, confidential, and safe process for individuals to report any wrongdoing, misconduct, or unethical behaviour in good faith.

Sorensen said wrongdoing includes, but is not limited to: 

• Fraud or financial misconduct 
• Misuse of public funds or assets 
• Breaches of legislation or town policy 
• Abuse of authority 
• Unsafe work practices or conditions 
• Discrimination, harassment, or bullying 
• Gross mismanagement 
• Reprisal against a whistleblower 

“This policy supports the town’s commitment to promote ethical, transparent, and accountable local government,” Sorensen said. “It helps whistleblowers feel secure in reporting wrongdoings, that they feel safe from retaliation.”

The policy comes several years after former mayor Rennie Harper’s resignation amid an investigation into her conduct during her seven-year tenure.
