Two more big points

Mustangs inch closer to playoff spot with another timely win

Every single point the Melfort Mustangs can get at this time of year, with where they stand, is massive, and they picked up another pair on Wednesday with a 4-1 win over the visiting Estevan Bruins.

The Mustangs are now just three points back of the eighth and final postseason position, following the win, and just a game under .500 for the first time since late November.

“Every point we can get is huge, and we’re right on the edge right now of playoffs, so I think with the way we’re playing at the moment, we’re gonna get in,” defenceman Darren Hunt told northeastNOW. “All we’ve been really working on is just having that 100% buy-in all the time, so no matter how we play, if we have that buy-in, and we have the work ethic, then we feel like we’re gonna win.”

Melfort has now won eight of their last 11 games, with points in nine, and three straight.

Hunt had his first point with the Blue and Green, by way of a second-period goal, as the Stangs led 3-0 after two.

Estevan pushed to start the third with a shorthanded goal, but the Mustangs answered immediately with a power play marker of their own to shut down any momentum.

“It felt nice to finally find the scoresheet, but as a defenceman, I’m just glad with the way we’ve been able to keep the pucks out of our net for the most part these past few games,” Hunt added.

“To stop any momentum they can get is always good, especially in the third, you don’t want them to feel like they’ll be able to come back in the game. To get one right after was a huge answer, and it really sealed it for us.”

Melfort will continue with big games this weekend, as they face yet another team just above them in the standings, when they collide for a weekend home-and-home set with their out-of-division rivals, in the Humboldt Broncos.
