Game of the Year?

Mustangs buzzer-beater fuels OT win over Broncos

Feb 14, 2026 | 3:04 PM

Some games you just remember, and Friday night between the Melfort Mustangs and Humboldt Broncos was definitely one of those times.

The contest was back and forth all night, as each team had their chances and power play opportunities.

Melfort opened the scoring in the first before Humboldt responded with two in the second.

The match then remained 2-1 Broncos for virtually the entire final frame, until a buzzer-beater goal by Dru Mushumanski tied it at two.

“We knew coming in that it was a big game, and with where we are in the standings, we needed the two points. I think we came out fine, and then we kind of struggled a bit, but towards the end, we kind of started pushing, and a couple of lucky goals, and then that’s all we needed,” Mushumanski said humbly.

“I honestly kind of blacked out a bit, (Danton) Cox did a great job keeping it in on the backhand, and it then went to the corner. Bo (Eisner) was the first one there, and he kind of threw it out, and it came right to me, so it was lucky enough to go in when it did.”

The Mushumanski equalizer went in with .3 seconds left on the clock.

That forced five minutes of three-on-three overtime, where Mushumanski got to play the hero once more.

“That one felt good, obviously. Coming into the zone, it was Cox to (Tristin) Ziola in front of the net, and then the puck kind of went right to me again, and I was able to bury it. I had to have a little fun after too,” he added.

“That was definitely a special goal. It’s been a tough go for me, but I think I’m slowly trying to turn it around. Obviously, that was a playoff game for us as well; every game is a playoff game right now, so that felt good.”

The Stangs are now back to .500 for the first time since November and are just one point back of a playoff spot, riding a four-game win streak.

Next up, the Blue and Green will see the Broncos again, as they travel to Humboldt on Saturday.

“It’s another big one. Coming in, we know we need these two points as well, so I think we just gotta stay hard. Obviously, they’re a younger team, so just stay hard on them, and hopefully, get another two points by riding this momentum,” Mushumanski concluded.
