Hawks edged in Weyburn, in Estevan Sunday afternoon

The Hawks started their southern road swing with a tight 3-2 loss to the Weyburn Red Wings Saturday.

The loss allowed the Red Wings to pull even with Nipawin for fourth in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) standings with 60 points.

Braeden Jockims opened the scoring for Nipawin giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead on the 20-year-old’s 10 goal of the year. Weyburn tied the game before the first period was out.

In the second period Nipawin lost captain Finley Radloff to a major penalty that the Hawks killed off, however Weyburn scored twice in under a minute to secure a 3-1 lead the Red Wings never gave up. Head Coach Tad Kozun said the team couldn’t follow up the major penalty kill.

“After we killed that off, I thought we let our emotions get the best of us,” he said on the postgame show on 750 Beach Radio. “We started to try and control things we can’t. A couple guys got high sticked or whatever, that took away our energy and allowed them to score a couple quick goals.”

The Hawks didn’t go quietly, Mason Karakochuk scored his 17th goal of the year and ninth in his last five games to bring the Hawks within one. Despite 15 third period shots Nipawin couldn’t find the equalizer eventually losing for a third time to the Red Wings this year.

The second period lapse and a benign powerplay that went scoreless in six opportunities including a two-man advantage in the third was Nipawin’s demise according to Kozun.

“We had our chances, pucks were laying there and we had a penalty shot. The ultimate killer is you can’t go oh-for-six on the powerplay, you need to tie it there,” he said.

The Hawks will regroup and get set for a matinee matchup in Estevan against the Bruins. Faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at Affinity Place. The pregame show on 750 Beach Radio begins at 3:45 p.m.
