City of Melfort seeking public input on Melfort Reservoir

Feb 19, 2026 | 5:21 PM

The City of Melfort is looking for feedback on the Melfort Reservoir.

Community Development Coordinator Kayla Prefontaine told northeastNOW they are looking to better understand how residents use and value the reservoir.

“That includes recreational activities, wildlife and conservation appreciation, and the overall role residents feel the reservoir plays in our community,” Prefontaine said.

Ducks Unlimited Canada has managed the dam and waterway on Melfort Creek, connected to the Melfort Reservoir, since a long-standing agreement with the City of Melfort dating back to 1993. Prefontaine said Ducks Unlimited Canada is preparing a proposal to the Water Security Agency (WSA) about the future of the Melfort Reservoir, which includes consideration of potential WSA ownership of the dam structures.

“The Water Security Agency has indicated that information demonstrating public use and community value is required to help strengthen the proposal,” Prefontaine explained. “Ducks Unlimited Canada has requested this information from the City of Melfort.”

The City of Melfort wants to ensure there is a long-term clarity around ownership, responsibility, and ongoing management of the dam infrastructure.

“Having a clear path forward helps protect public safety, supports conservation efforts, and ensures the reservoir continues to provide recreational and community benefits.”

Prefontaine said the reservoir is a valued space for wildlife habitat and for residents to enjoy nature, and continues to play an important role in conservation, recreation, and overall community well-being.

Residents can provide input by March 6.
