Mustangs win eighth straight with tight win over La Ronge

Feb 22, 2026 | 8:16 PM

The Melfort Mustangs picked up their eighth win in a row Saturday night in La Ronge, narrowly defeating the host Ice Wolves 5-3.

Melfort gave up the first goal in the opening frame, before responding with two in the second to make it 2-1.

The start of the third was then hectic, to say the least, as three goals were scored in the opening two minutes, two of which belonged to La Ronge to even it up at three.

The Mustangs then added a pair later on in the final stanza, one of which was an empty-netter, to pick up the victory and remain in sixth place in the league standings.

“Definitely not our best, but coming up here, and playing on the road, they work really hard. You rarely play your best up here, but we chipped in what we could on offence and got the job done,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“There’s stuff going on around us with other teams, but none of that really matters as long as we take care of our own business. We just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and keep stringing wins together, and the rest will take care of itself.”

The Stangs will next see the ice on Tuesday when they host the Weyburn Red Wings for a make-up game.

Following that, the Blue and Green will have the ultimate test when they battle the league-best Flin Flon Bombers in a weekend home-and-home set.
