Theresa Thorsen is a Cree-Métis from Muskoday First Nation located within Treaty Six territory. As part of Indigenous Storytelling Month in Saskatchewan, Thorsen shared the story of Wesakejack and the Chickadees.

“The intention of the audio recording of this story and other stories is to validate oral tradition and storytelling as a way of learning and for cultural preservation,” she said.

Thorsen earned her Bachelor of Education degree from SUNTEP Saskatoon(2004), a Masters of Education degree from the University of Saskatchewan (2013) in the area of Critical Environmental, anti-racist/anti-oppressive education and is currently enrolled in the Indigenous Education Doctoral program with Gabriel Dumont Institute in partnership with the University of Regina.

Nurtured by the stories passed down from her mother, Elder Bente Huntley, Thorsen has continued her lineage by stepping into her role as a storyteller. Throughout her life, and as the Indigenous Perspectives Consultant with the Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division, Thorsen said she has had the privilege of learning alongside numerous Elders and Knowledge Keepers. Over her twenty years in education, she has sought to honour their teachings by integrating Indigenous worldviews into the public education system.

“The work we do in Indigenous Education within Saskatchewan Rivers Public School Division is guided by our Elders Advisory Council.  I have had the honour of working alongside and learning from each of our Elders and Knowledge Keepers on our council since 2022, when I became a part of the Indigenous Perspectives team.”

Various events are taking place across the province as part of Indigenous Storytelling Month. Thorsen will be presenting at an event on Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Saskatchewan Polytech campus in Prince Albert.
