About 40 cm fell last week

Snow removal continues in Humboldt

Last week’s dump of snow kept city crews in Humboldt busy.

Director of Public Works Peter Bergquist told northeastNOW crews and private contractors have done well to remove the snow.

“Estimates are around 40 cm (16”) of snow,” Bergquist said.

Bergquist said they were fortunate in that the wind wasn’t as big a factor in this snowfall that in others. Another bonus for this snowfall was that it occurred during the school break.

“This was mostly a very heavy snowfall event.”

It didn’t take city crews long to tackle the snow. Bergquist said they focused on Priority 1 routes the first night the snow fell, including emergency routes, highways, and parts of the downtown core.

“This at least got some traffic moving,” explained Bergquist.

The following day, removal crews re-plowed Priority 1 streets, then moved onto the Priority 2 and 3 routes.

“We are fortunate to have the private contractor support we have in our city when we encounter situations like this,” Bergquist said. “We also had crews make a single pass down residential streets with loaders to simply open them up for emergency access and to get people road access again, then at a later date the graders will come back and make a cleaner job.”

Bergquist said after a snow of this magnitude, the city’s first priority is to get roads open quickly by making that initial pass on residential streets.

“We know this can leave snow at the end of driveways, which is frustrating,” said Bergquist. “Unfortunately, this is unavoidable during the first pass in deep snow.”

Graders will return to properly plow roads and improve conditions over the coming days, and Bergquist said the city appreciates the patience of residents.

Residents can help the city by removing vehicles off streets, if possible, until they are fully plowed. Bergquist said that it will help crews achieve better clearing.

Municipalities had some time to prepare for this snow event, and Bergquist said Humboldt’s crews use that time to coordinate support with private contractors, plan day and night shifts, and ensure equipment is ready for the week ahead. They also tried to time when that snow would arrive.
