RCMP looking for input

Policing discussed at Nipawin Council meeting

Council in Nipawin discussed the RCMP Annual Performance Plan and Local Policing Priorities at their meeting this week.

Nipawin Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Michele Sorensen told northeastNOW the plan is a partnership between the public and local law enforcement.

The letter from Nipawin Staff Sgt. Kyle Wyonzek said Nipawin/Smeaton RCMP are “seeking to solicit input for this year’s policing priorities from our community representatives.”

The letter states that the priorities will be recorded and tracked on the Detachment Action Plan for the 2026/27 fiscal year.

“Along with the priorities set by the RCMP, which are centred around making our communities safer places to live and do business (reduction of property crimes and crimes against persons, trafficking and enforcement of prolific offenders, reducing property crime in our area, etc.), Council have requested additional presence during the night hours,” Sorensen said.

She said the town hopes to assist the RCMP in making the community a safer place to live and do business, and added it’s very important for Nipawin to provide their feedback so that the RCMP are aware of issues facing local municipalities.

“Council appreciated the ongoing priorities included in the plan, and added the request for additional presence during the night hours.”

Wyonzek’s letter outlined some of the goals for the detachment.

“We will also continue to strive to make our communities safer and work with all our stakeholders on reducing the property crime in our area and working with the communities on how to protect their property and reducing being a soft target for criminals,” the letter read.

Sorensen said the RCMP will review the feedback and possibly add the issues to their policing goals for next year.
