The Hawks were swept in their season series versus Yorkton after Friday’s 7-2 rout of Nipawin in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) play.

The loss was the Hawks fourth in a row away from the Centennial Arena and Nipawin has now dropped to 13 wins and 13 losses this season including two of those at Westland Arena.

Yorkton opened the scoring in the first, added a second goal early in the middle period, and b the time the second period concluded the Terreirs had a 5-2 lead. Head Coach Tad Kozun was pleased with the opening period on the road against a good team, but the second on was not acceptable.

“We came out in the second period completely flat, and they ran all over us,” he huffed on the postgame show. “We get a real nice powerplay goal there to make it a one goal game and they come right back. The next couple are breakdowns that can’t happen and the game is out of reach.”

Mason Karakockuk and Braeden Jockims each scored and added assists in the game. The Saskatoon born duo continues to shine for the Hawks, Jockims has goals in eight straight games and 10 overall in that stretch, Karakochuk has points in a dozen straight contests including 12 goals and 24 points.

Nipawin is now off until March 6 when the Hawks travel to Melfort to meet the Mustangs. Kozun said February was a busy month with 12 games. He said having a break before the Mustangs matchup will hopefully reset his group going into the final four games of the regular season.

“We haven’t had much practice time, so the nice part is we get four days next week to hash things out and work on the things we need to. We’ve got to get ready for Friday night because Melfort might be the hottest team in the league right now. We’ve got to be ready to go,” he concluded.

The Hawks have clinched a playoff spot and will return to the postseason for the first time in a couple years. With the break before next Friday Nipawin will scoreboard watch. The team is currently in fourth place, three points back of the Battlefords and two ahead of Weyburn.

The Red Wings are idle until Wednesday, the North Stars host Humboldt Saturday.
