100 Women Who Care Melfort donation

Melfort Public Library receives $10,000

Mar 9, 2026 | 5:00 PM

The 100 Women Who Care chapter in Melfort has donated another $10,000 to a worthy local organization.

This quarter’s recipient is the Melfort Public Library (MPL).

“We were surprised, overwhelmed, and honoured to be chosen, as all three organizations were worthy recipients,” Board Chair Christina Prybylski, Vice-Chair Karen Duncan, and Head Librarian Machel Slabbert wrote.

The other organizations that made presentations at the meeting were Hope on the Prairies, and Marguerite Riel Centre.

They said the money will be used to expand library materials and programs.

“As literacy rates are currently on the decline, the MPL aims to provide materials and programs that appeal to all cultures, backgrounds, ethnicities, as well as inclusion of all ages,” the three said. “One very specific program we are looking to expand will be our ‘Advent Reading Calendars’.

Families are provided with 24 individually wrapped books for them to open and read together through the month of December. The books are selected by staff, sorted, bundled, and wrapped for families.

“The number of families who can participate is limited by the book resources the library currently has,” they wrote. “This past December we maxed out our resources at 65 families and are looking forward to increasing that number.”

The trio said the Melfort Public Library values families and the time they spend together. They currently offer programs including Fort Night, Peeps Diorama, and pumpkin decorating, but they would like to expand that to include in-library board games, a book and movie club, and re-introduce the monthly Lego challenge.

Their largest program the MPL offers is the Summer Reading Program that runs from June through August for ages 12 and under.

“During these months we often bring in programs and entertainers, such as The Go Science Summer Outreach Program that is put on by the Regina Science Centre. These programs fill up quite quickly with many being put on a waitlist.”

The additional funds are expected to allow the MPL to add more dates to give more children the opportunity to take part in these types of programs.

The library also features Toddler Story Time, Reading with the Mustangs, Baby Book Worms, the Page Turners book club, Home Schoolers Meet-ups, and many more events and opportunities.

They wrote that the donation is important as material costs are continually rising. Irrespective of the donation, the library is happy to get an opportunity to share with 100 women why the library is an invaluable resource.

“We want to thank the ‘100 Women Who Care’; they are doing amazing work for our local community. It goes to show how much of an impact we can have on our communities when we work together.”

They said the donation will make a visual difference in the library over the years to come, and they are extremely grateful.
