Hawks with one last chance to diffuse Bombers

The Hawks have one more chance to end a four-plus year losing streak in Flin Flon on Tuesday in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

Nipawin has not won at the Whitney Forum since Feb. 15, 2022, a span of 14 games. The Hawks are coming off another strong week with back-to-back wins over Melfort and Warman. Head Coach Tad Kozun is proud of the way his group rebounded after a couple losses in a row.

“You go into Melfort and they had won 12 in a row; I thought that was a huge test and we answered the bell. We had Warman Sunday, and we know they are out of it, but you can’t take anyone lightly right now. You must be ready to go, and I thought our guys did that,” Kozun said.

Nipawin has two games left in the regular season, Tuesday’s matchup in Flin Flon and at home to Melfort on Friday. The Hawks are currently in fourth place, two points behind the Battlefords and Yorkton and two points up on Weyburn.

Finding a way to snap the lengthy losing streak in Manitoba would be a massive boost for playoff positioning, but the group’s confidence is also another factor according to Kozun.

“We need to get off to a good start,” Kozun said. “Last time we were up there I thought we played really well in the second and third periods, but we were just behind the eight ball. We need to start on time; you can’t give them a two or three goal lead. Secondly when those things happen you can’t let it snowball either.”

You can hear the game on 750 Beach Radio starting with the pregame show at 6:15 p.m. Saskatchewan time, faceoff is 6:30 p.m.
