Nipawin Council discusses employee departure, equipment issue

The Town of Nipawin is looking for a new employee. 

The general manager of corporate services has resigned to move on to a different position, according to Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Michele Sorensen. 

“We will be posting the position right away, and the incoming CAO will be involved in the interview and hiring process,” Sorensen said. 

Sorensen herself is retiring at the end of April, and new CAO David Gillen will take the reigns April 6. 

“The GM of Corporate Services is responsible for the financial stewardship of the town, including development of policies, long-range financial plans, and strategic initiatives, while ensuring compliance with regulatory reporting requirements,” Sorensen explained.

She said the department is responsible for IT, human resources, and more. 

Meanwhile, the Leisure Services Department Monthly Report was also discussed at Monday’s council meeting. One of the significant topics in that report was an incident with the ice plant at the Nipawin Evergreen Centre. 

“On February 28, the ice plant at the Evergreen Centre went into alarm,” Sorensen said. “A number of items were identified, and the issue was resolved before any ice was lost.” 

Sorensen said it’s always a concern that when equipment fails, situations like this can occur. However, she praised the efforts of the Leisure Services Supervisor to ensure the issue was resolved quickly. 

“The failure was remediated and we are confident going forward,” explained Sorensen. “Having said this, there is always a risk of equipment failure.”
