Mustangs use lengthy delay to fuel win over Estevan

Mar 12, 2026 | 3:30 AM

The Melfort Mustangs and Estevan Bruins played a bit of a bizarre game Wednesday night.

Everything was typical through the first period and intermission, as both teams were tied at one goal apiece.

Come what should’ve been the start of the second period, however, is where the game took a bit of a shift.

Nearly an hour delay began, as ice issues became a problem at the Northern Lights Palace, with snow, water, extra flooding, and eventually, fire extinguishers becoming the solution.

That led the final periods to finally be played, as one team seemed to come out of the long break much better than the other.

“It’s definitely tough to sit that long without playing, so you end up taking the skates off, and just trying to relax a little bit, but yet staying dialled in at the same time. Some of the boys ride the bike or stretch out, so we did a good job at staying dialled in for the game, and became stronger in the second,” explained Mustangs’ forward Kaleb Binner.

“We’ll take it, obviously, it always sucks when stuff like that happens, and for the fans it’s a late night for them as well. We just came out of the break firing because we knew that we had to, because this game was huge for us, and we got the job done.”

Got the job done is an understatement, as the Stangs went on to shut out the Bruins 5-0 in the final 40 minutes, en route to a 6-1 victory.

Two of those goals came off the stick of Binner, as he and the Blue and Green clinched sixth place in this year’s regular season standings with the two points.

“I just put them in, and that’s expected when they give me those passes in those kinds of areas. Credit to (Luke) Mackenzie, (Lincoln) Rogers, and (Nolan)Patterson for putting the puck right on my tape at the right times,” Binner added.

“We’re so proud of this group for having been as far back as we were in 10th in the middle of January to now securing sixth place. It’s honestly unheard of, but we know the job’s not done. The buy-in is there in that room, so we’re gonna go make a long run in the playoffs and get it done a third time.”
