Hawks look to take back home ice in series with Red Wings; Game 3 Tuesday

The Nipawin Hawks will seek to take home ice advantage back in their first round Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) playoff series with Weyburn on Tuesday.

The teams split the first two games at Centennial Arena leading to games three and four at Whitecap Resources Centre. Nipawin Head Coach and General Manager Tad Kozun said his team responded in game two getting the response needed to get back in the series.

“Getting off to a quick start and getting that goal early was key for us,” he said after the Hawks morning skate in Weyburn. “It got the crowd right into it and it was loud in there. We really fed off the energy that our fans brought. I thought we continued from the night before (game one) just making sure we continued to do things the right way.”

The Hawks got down 3-0 in game one before falling 4-2 with Weyburn scoring an empty net goal late.

With the series shifting to Weyburn Kozun said the Hawks will need to find that same energy on the road where they lost and won 14 games in the regular season.

“We got down last night and were able to enjoy a meal and get to the hotel. Today is more of a normal day for us doing our pregame stuff that we always do. The message isn’t going to change; it’s playoff time. It’s their first home game in their barn so you know they are going to be ready to go. We just need to be ready at puck drop and keep playing the way we are,” he said.

The Hawks will be without 19-year-old forward and co-leader in goals Konnor Watson. He was suspended one game for a charging major in game two.

Faceoff is set for 7 p.m., the pregame show on 750 Beach Radio will start at 6:45 p.m.
