Detailed assessment to take place

Nipawin Council approves further review of Evergreen Centre’s boiler system

The Town of Nipawin continues to work toward improvements to the Evergreen Centre.

At the recent council meeting, a report from General Manager of Leisure Services Chelsea Corrigan to council asked for direction regarding a professional review of mechanical upgrades to the building.

“This is part of our ongoing due diligence as we move forward with the Evergreen Centre renovation,” Corrigan explained to northeastNOW. “As part of Phase 1 planning, Council has authorized additional work to better understand the current boiler system and ensure we’re making the most informed decision moving forward.”

Council approved engaging Inline Plumbing and Heating to flush the boiler lines and complete a detailed assessment of the system. Corrigan said the work will help the Town better understand the conditions of the system and its potential for continued use as part of the overall renovation of the building.

Corrigan said the mechanical systems are also aging, and the goal is to ensure that the Town fully understands the condition of the current system before making a larger investment, and to determine the most practical and cost-effective approach in the future.

“The feasibility study already identified that major building systems would require upgrades,” said Corrigan. “What this process has done is highlight that there may be more than one viable path forward, and it’s important that we take the time to fully assess those options.”

The goal with the review is to confirm whether the existing boiler system, once properly cleaned and assessed, could continue to be a viable option for the Evergreen Centre, or if a complete replacement is the best way to go.

“Ultimately, it’s about ensuring we choose the right system for the building. In the feasibility study, it identified moving forward with replacement of the boiler system or moving to a forced air system. Facilities the size of the Evergreen Centre generally have a boiler system.”

The Town continues to keep an eye out for grant funding to move the project past Phase 1, according to Corrigan. That phase includes replacement and repairs to the boiler system, roof repairs and critical repairs including decommissioning some storage space or bringing it up to code.

“This is a short-term step that aligns with our Phase 1 planning,” Corrigan said. “The work to flush and assess the system will take place in the near term, and we expect to have clearer direction shortly after that work is completed.”

The Town’s goal with the facility’s renovation is to ensure that it is done in a fiscally responsible and informed way, and the mechanical system invested in is reliable, appropriate, and provides the best long-term value. They will continue to follow the phased approach outlined in the feasibility study.

“This work is simply about confirming the best mechanical solution within that plan,” said Corrigan. “Taking this step now helps ensure we get it right from the beginning.”
