Tisdale, Wakaw students honoured for academic, extracurricular success

A pair of local students have received prestigious honours. 

Emily Gustus of Tisdale Middle and Secondary School (TMSS) has been named a 2026 Loran Scholar. 

“The Loran Award is Canada’s largest and most comprehensive undergraduate award, granted to young people on the basis of character, commitment to service in their community, and leadership potential,” the school posted. 

Over 5,400 applications were submitted by youth across Canada, and just 36 were chosen to join the 37th class of Loran Scholars by the Loran Scholars Foundation. 

“In addition to being an exemplary student, Emily volunteers with the local fire department, participating in training, emergency calls, and leading the community through fire safety. She holds a glider and private pilot license and brings aviation experiences to youth across Saskatchewan,” the TMSS news release stated.

Wakaw School Grade 12 student Marti Burechailo has been named as a recipient of the Chancellor’s Scholarship from the University of Regina, one of just a dozen students across Canada to receive the honour, carrying a total value of $46,000. 

Marti is planning to pursue a degree in Kinesiology and Health Studies. 

“Throughout her high school career, she has maintained an exceptional academic average of 97 per cent or higher, demonstrating a strong commitment to excellence in the classroom,” a release from Wakaw School stated, adding that her contributions extend beyond academics. 

“She is an active member of the student leadership team and serves as captain of her lacrosse and hockey teams. Her leadership has been evident not only in her roles but also the way she supports and motivates those around her.” 

When asked about receiving the scholarship, Marti said in the release that she was surprised, overwhelmed, and overjoyed, and hearing the news in front of classmates made the moment even more special.  

“It means so much to me,” she said. “It shows me that I can do anything and achieve anything I put my mind to.”
