First Round Elimination

Mustangs season ends in double overtime

Mar 29, 2026 | 2:43 AM

The Melfort Mustangs 2025/26 season has come to an end.

Melfort matched up with the Battlefords North Stars in the first round of the SJHL playoffs and fell in five games.

Game 5 was held in North Battleford on Saturday and went to double overtime.

Unfortunately for the Mustangs, they failed to score in both extra frames, despite three opportunities on the power play, ultimately losing 4-3.

The Stangs dug an early hole in the series, dropping the first three games, making it do-or-die the rest of the way.

They were able to win their lone match in Game 4 at home on Wednesday, by a 9-4 margin, to force a Game 5, but that was all they could muster.

Melfort arguably had the better chance to win each game in the series, outshooting their opposition 215-146, but timely goaltending by Battlefords and a lack of execution at times for the Mustangs were their ultimate demise.

With the Stangs now out of the playoffs, they are no longer the two-time defending champions, as someone new will hoist the trophy this year.

The Blue and Green will now have to wait another 5+ months to try and recapture the title and get back on top of the SJHL.
