NEOSS receives donation from 100 Women Who Care – Tisdale

The 100 Women Who Care chapter in Tisdale has handed out its latest award to a local non-profit organization.

The benefactor this year was North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS), as they were given the $70,000 raised by the Tisdale chapter.

NEOSS Executive Director Joan Bear told northeastNOW they were thrilled to be chosen after their presentation.

“We were over the top excited to receive this important donation,” Bear said.

She said they centred their presentation around an important service they provide for clients.

“Our purpose for the presentation was to ask for funds to assist our clients in obtaining their identification documents as that is not a funded expense we can cover,” explained Bear. “The clients can’t move forward without basic ID for getting social assistance, housing, banking, or tax benefits from (Canada Revenue Agency).”

The money will be used for clients to obtain personal identification documents for both them and their dependent children.

“This money will come in very handy to help our clients with this important step to getting their identification documents.”

NEOSS is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to supporting safety and healing, while empowering families in crisis in Saskatchewan. They operate an Emergency Women’s Shelter for 16 beds, plus five emergency beds that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. NEOSS also operates second-stage transitional housing at a four-plex in Melfort, along with a six-bed Emergency Children’s Receiving Home for children apprehended by the Ministry of Social Services to help provide short-term emergency support for kids 11 and under.

“NEOSS [also] operates violence preventative services through its Nipawin FIRST office with advocates who provide Family Intervention Rapid Support Team supports for individuals and families dealing with domestic violence,” Bear said.

While the presentation helped NEOSS obtain the generous donation from the 100 Women Who Care Tisdale, it also helped outline the many facets of their organization and what they do for people in need in the northeast.

“NEOSS is open to providing community presentations to share education and awareness about gender-based violence and interpersonal violence help in the northeast region of Saskatchewan,” Bear said. “Help is available, and we want to ensure that we get that information out.”

The services they provide are unique to the area, and there are no other Women’s Emergency Shelters in the area, Bear said.

“All the remote communities and urban centres need to know NEOSS stands with them to provide support and help through our Shelters, Personal Violence Counselling, Crisis Line Support, and even access to online services.”

Bear added they are extremely thankful for the 100 Women Tisdale chapter.

“We are very grateful for the 100 Women Who Care – Tisdale for their generous support to helping women in the [northeast] to have access to funds to help them get a fresh start and re-establish their lives by obtaining their identification documents as that is the first step in moving forward for housing, banking, and financial support. This donation provides a very strong foundation.”
