SaskPower smart meter installations in Melfort, Tisdale areas complete

Apr 9, 2026 | 2:36 PM

The SaskPower installation of smart meters in the region is now complete.

Spokesperson Joel Cherry told northeastNOW that installation in Melfort, Tisdale, and surrounding rural areas was completed late last month.

SaskPower began installing the meters in the area last summer. The Nipawin area had their meters installed, beginning in 2024.

Work continues to bring the meters to the entire province, according to Cherry.

“As of the end of March, 219,391 of 505,000, or 43 per cent of residential smart meters have been installed [across the province],” Cherry stated.

SaskPower has an updated map on their website, showing progress on the installations.

Cherry said the plan is for SaskPower to have mass deployment of the meters within the next three years, depending on the availability of the meters themselves.

According to Cherry, there are several reasons the smart meters are a benefit to residents and the company.

“Benefits of smart meters include billing based on actual power use, which means no more bills that are based on estimated meter reads,” Cherry said. “It also allows customers to get more detailed and timely information about their power use.”

For SaskPower, Cherry said the meters let them know immediately when an outage occurs, helping them to respond, pinpoint the cause, and restore power more quickly.
