Humboldt City Manager Joe Day announces retirement

Apr 11, 2026 | 8:02 AM

Humboldt is on the search for a new City Manager.

The City has announced that Joe Day has announced his retirement, effective Aug. 15.

Day has served as City Manager in Humboldt since 2017 after spending several months as Director of Finance. He previously spent over 14 years with the City of Prince Albert and in North Battleford. The City of Humboldt’s news release stated that Day has spent over 30 years in public service.

“The City of Humboldt has been a wonderful place to live and work for the last nine-plus years, and there has been some hesitation in making this decision,” Day said in the release. “The management team, along with staff at all levels, has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to making this the great community it is. I am, however, looking forward to slowing down somewhat from the pace of the City Manager position and plan to remain involved in community governance activities in a consulting role.”

The City has credited Day for playing a major role in Humboldt’s growth and development, including the Centennial Park redevelopment, Highway 5 resurfacing, the new wastewater treatment facility, and the Carl Schenn Pond.

“Notable accomplishments under his leadership include stabilizing the City’s financial situation and building consistency into the City’s water main, roadway, and fleet renewals,” said the statement.

Day was also credited with his leadership during challenging times, including the Humboldt Broncos bus tragedy and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Throughout his career with the City, Day strengthened budgeting processes, advanced community safety initiatives, fostered regional collaborations, and built strong partnerships with land and construction developers,” the statement read.

Mayor Rob Muench said Humboldt has benefited greatly from his guidance and thanked him for his leadership and dedication.
