More snow in forecast

City of Melfort issuing recommendations to help avoid water seepage issues

Apr 20, 2026 | 2:10 PM

The snow continues to melt across the northeast, but we’re far from out of the woods.

With higher temperatures over the next couple of days, and more snow in the forecast later this week, the chances of water affecting residents’ homes increase.

The City of Melfort is cautioning homeowners to be prepared to avoid seepage into their homes, and basement flooding.

They recommended shovelling all snow away from the foundation of your property, including window wells.

Meanwhile, homeowners are also recommended to remove snow away from the lot edges, to improve drainage.

“Keep snow on your property,” the city news release said. “Do not block streets or drains.”

It’s also important to make sure residents help clear catch basins of snow and ice, if possible, to make drainage easier.

Ensuring downspouts are extended several feet away from the home and are draining water properly is also an important step to reduce the chances of seepage into the home.

The city suggests if water is pooling near your home, pump it away. They also suggest using sandbags, if necessary, to protect low areas near your foundation.
