Ag minister discusses research during Saskatchewan visit

May 20, 2026 | 10:38 AM

Federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald kicked off a two-day visit to Saskatchewan yesterday with a stop at the University of Saskatchewan.

MacDonald toured the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and later met with industry stakeholders. The discussion focused on research, with 16 representatives taking part in person and virtually.

The federal government received heavy criticism over plans to close seven Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada research facilities across the country. They include a major research and development centre in Lacombe, Alta., and satellite research farms in Scott and Indian Head, Sask., and Portage la Prairie, Man.

Farmer organizations and research scientists have been lobbying to keep the facilities open by looking at alternative measures.

MacDonald said he is listening to what they’re saying.

“When the closures were first discussed, it was very apparent people were upset. But as we move forward, I think we’re starting to see a vision take shape. The organizations I just spoke with are helping form that vision and outline some of the changes government should make,” MacDonald said.

The minister also said it’s an opportunity to make changes and do things differently, especially when it comes to regulations.

“Right now, government sees this as an opportunity to make changes. Whether that’s in research, science or regulations, it doesn’t matter. It’s an opportunity right now. Let’s make a shift. Let’s be at the forefront and let’s be leaders around the world in science and research.”

MacDonald is in Regina today to meet with Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit. The agenda includes discussions about the next agricultural policy framework, which will cover risk management, innovation and sustainability for the five-year period from April 2028 to March 2033.

MacDonald will also attend the official grand opening of the Cargill canola crushing plant.
