Former Mustangs’ captain joins U of S Huskies leadership group

“This year, we’re kind of adopting a new mentality in our room, which is just focusing on going day by day. I think in the past two years we’ve gotten a little bit too far ahead of ourselves and kind of set our sights on the final end goal. As important as that goal is, I think our daily processes and focusing on what’s important right now is what’s going to help us succeed, so for me as a leader, it’s just doing that each and every day.”

For the current 23-year-old, it’s especially a day-to-day approach, as he doesn’t know how many days left he will have in the Green and White.

The 2002-born forward with ties to the Gronlid area has more than just a year left of eligibility but knows it could be his last season.

With that in mind, he said he’s not taking anything for granted, is enjoying the ride a little more, reflecting on how far he’s come and what’s important, and understanding his role as a leader without putting too much pressure on himself.

“When I was a younger captain, I honestly don’t know if I was ready for it. I feel like I had a lot of maturing to do, and it was a learning process, but by the end of it, I think that helped me a lot. I was able to be a bit more mature and lead in a proper way, and we have lots of leaders in our room, so I’m not going to put too much pressure on myself. It’s just about relying on one another and building on each other’s experience in that sense,” Tkachuk added.

He also attributes a lot of who he’s become to his parents, including his father Kelly, who was a Mustang captain in his own right back in the day.
