Mustangs drop final two exhibition games against Humboldt

The Melfort Mustangs concluded their preseason schedule this past weekend against the Humboldt Broncos.

After going 2-0 earlier in the week in a home-and-home set with the Nipawin Hawks, the Mustangs fell to the other side of the results, dropping both of their contests versus the Broncos.

Melfort travelled to Humboldt Friday night and scored a late equalizer to force things to a shootout, before losing the skills competition, while an empty-net goal ultimately sealed their fate Saturday at the Northern Lights Palace.

Overall, the Stangs finished 2-2 in their exhibition matches, while seeing a lot of their young and newer players cycle through the lineup.

“I think it was good; most of the preseason is just about getting the young guys into our systems and getting everything rolling for the year, so it was pretty good. We had a lot of close games, so I think we’re looking good for the year,” explained veteran defenceman Darren Hunt.

“I think our compete level was pretty good for the most part, obviously playing against two of our biggest rivals, but we still have a lot of work to do. Overall, it wasn’t too bad of a showing for our exhibition matches, but now it’s important to bear down this week and make sure we’re ready to go for the regular season. Then, we’ll see how it goes from there.”

The SJHL regular season begins on Friday, with the Blue and Green starting the year at home, playing host to a familiar opponent in Nipawin.
