MFD responds to harrowing horse rescue, save horse stuck in mud pit

Two very different, but nerve-wracking calls for the Melfort Fire Department on Wednesday.

The first call came in just after 7:30 a.m. for a horse stuck in a pit. Fire crews arrived to find a horse stuck in a mud pit, and it’s believed the animal was there for several hours and was exhausted upon their arrival.

Crews assembled a swing and tried to lift the horse out of the pit with a loader, but the animal slid out of the sling due to the muddy conditions and the horse panicking.

The department then dug a more gradual slope down into the pit, and the horse was guided and pulled out.

The animal is expected to make a full recovery.

The department thanked neighbours for their help and equipment during the rescue.

Meanwhile, on later that same evening, crews were called out to an electrical fire on Regent St.

A meter-box on the side of the house was found to be arcing when they arrived, and members created a perimeter to keep people away from the hazard.

Crews controlled the spread of the fire with a fire extinguisher until SaskPower arrived and shut off the power. The remaining fire was put out when the power was cut.

No one was injured during the incident.
