Hawks strong start fades in loss to North Stars
The Nipawin Hawks have started the 2026 – 27 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season with a pair of road losses after a 4-1 defeat in the Battlefords on Saturday.
Looking for rebound from a 6-3 loss on Friday in Melfort in their season opener, Nipawin started strong taking a 1-0 lead over the North Stars in the first period on a powerplay goal by Raydr Wallington, the hometown 20-year-old’s first of the season.
The lead lasted until the 2:16 mark of the second period when the North Stars tied the game. The 1-1 deadlock remained until the third period when the Battlefords scored three unanswered goals handing the Hawks another disappointing result at the Access Communications Centre. Head Coach Tad Kozun said on the Nipawin Chrysler Dodge Hawks Hockey postgame show on 750 Beach Radio that he liked the first before the game turned.
“We generated a lot, didn’t give up anything,” he said of the first period. “We talked about they are a stretch team and wanted to stretch the zone, I thought our defenceman did a great job of suffocating them and turning it back the other way.”
