Hawks heating up heading to Warman

After dropping the first three games of the 2026 – 27 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season the Nipawin Hawks have won four of their last five game and are now back to a .500 winning percentage.

Friday at the Centennial Arena the Hawks routed Humboldt 7-3 to even the team’s record at four wins and four losses. Head Coach Tad Kozun said his group has turned a corner after a lacklustre start.

“Obviously not the start we wanted at oh-and-three but that’s in the rearview mirror now,” he said after the win over the Broncos. “We just needed a little longer time to get stuff figured out and we had to make some tough decisions. I think maybe there were some guys on pins and needles. Guys are settling in now and we are finding the way we need to play.”

Hawks captain Mason Karakochuk led the way with two goals in Friday’s win, the SJHL leader also scored in the victory over Estevan. He has nine goals in eight games. Rookie forward Carson Park has six assists in his last two games as a 17-year-old and Jack Janzen has climbed to second in SJHL scoring over the last four games.

Nipawin will look for a third straight win Saturday in Warman against the Wolverines. Warman ruined the hawks home opener at the ‘Cage’ on Sept. 25 with a 5-4 win. Kozun said the same game plan applies heading into the Warman Home Centre.

“We can’t waiver from what we are doing, we always talk about the process here, we’re working on it still, but I really like the steps we’ve taken the last couple games, and we have to continue to build off of it,” he said.

Faceoff is salted for 7:30 p.m., the pregame show on 750 Beach Radio will begin at 7:15 p.m.
