Up North To Flin Flon

Mustangs travel to defending champs for first time this season

The Melfort Mustangs are hitting the road up north Friday night for a clash with a division rival.

Melfort will take on the Flin Flon Bombers, marking the first meeting of the season with the defending champs.

“When you see Flin Flon on the schedule, it can be a little bit intimidating. Obviously, the Whitney Forum is not an easy place to play in, but I think it brings out a different side in all of our guys. Our line, for example, is going to have to be a bit more of a forechecking group, playing really hard and trying to get pucks to the net, versus really more on our skill. We still want to play our game while also being rough out there, so I think we’re gonna be good,” explained forward Dru Mushumanski.

“I think there’s definitely pressure on them this season as the defending champs, so it maybe puts us in a better spot. Maybe they’re gripping their sticks a little tight this year, and we can capitalize on that.”

Last season the Bombers only ever lost once on their home ice, which came in extra time against the Mustangs.

Now Flin Flon is a perfect 3-0 in their building to start the year, while the Stangs are 4-1 on the road.

“We’ve told the younger guys that obviously it’s not gonna come easy in their barn, but all of our guys have the ability to play rough, and I think they’re prepared,” Mushumanski added.

“I think they move well, they’ve got a solid couple of lines, and they got a good goalie, so traffic is going to be huge. I’m not taking anything away from our group we have here, though, because it’s definitely something special. We’ve got off to a good start, and everybody wants to win in there, so I’m glad to be a part of it, and hopefully we can continue to have a good season.”

In other Blue and Green news, Melfort has traded away defenceman Daniel Skalicky to the Kindersley Klippers in exchange for a third-round draft pick and a player development fee. The 2008-born product had suited up four times for the Mustangs this season and was still searching for his first point.
