Mustangs give up lead in loss to Humboldt

The Melfort Mustangs had their eyes on an excellent weekend, but the Humboldt Broncos stormed back scoring five unanswered goals on route to a 6-4 win at the Northern Lights Palace on Saturday in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

“It was a tale of two games,” Assistant Coach Clarke Huxley said on the postgame show. “We responded well in the first, the second we continued to pour it on, but the last half, we didn’t do what we needed.”

Humboldt opened the scoring just three minutes in, but the Mustangs responded with a pair of goals before the first buzzer. Darren Hunt buried his first of the season from the left point, Matthew Bertolin added a late powerplay goal to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead after the first period.

The Mustangs added to their cushion in the second, Bertolin scored again to give Melfort a 3-1 lead. Captain Tristan Ziola notched his fourth of the year just passed the halfway point of regulation.

Humboldt bounced back in the second half, Ryan Ulmer cut the lead to two, and Cody Farrell scored a game changing powerplay goal with five seconds left in the second period cutting the lead to one.

“Our penalty kill was good tonight, but we gave that one up. We can’t do anything about it now,” Huxley said.

Farrell did more damage tying game at 4-4 just four minutes into the third period.

Leo Seitz scored the game winner with just over five minutes left. Seitz added an empty net goal as well to cap the scoring with Nick Kotai on the bench for an extra attacker.

Huxley admitted giving the late second period goal hurt, but a response was needed.

“We gave it up, not acceptable and yes they got life going to the third, but it’s up to us to stop that momentum and we didn’t do that,” he said.

The Mustangs will host Flin Flon Tuesday; both clubs have 14 points and are tied for fourth early this season. Melfort beat Flin Flon 6-1 Friday. Huxley said his group will feel the bite of Saturday’s loss and prepare for the reigning champions.

“This one will sting, we will sit on this one, but we have Flin Flon Tuesday, back to work, Monday we focus on a big game,” Huxley concluded.

Faceoff is 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.
