Locals taken in WHL Prospects Draft

The WHL Prospects Draft was held on Thursday, and the list was full of local players.

Kayden Stroeder was the first local product selected. The Humboldt U15 AA Bronco from Lanigan was selected fifth overall by the Edmonton Oil Kings. The centre had 127 points in just 27 games last season, including 58 goals. He also had 2 points in 3 games for the Prince Albert Mintos.

Nipawin’s Blake Chorney was taken with the tenth pick by the Vancouver Giants. Chorney, a centre, had 42 points in 24 regular-season games, and 12 points in five playoff games with Northern Alberta Xtreme U15 Prep.

Defenseman Liam Myhre will be staying close to home. The Nipawin native was drafted by the Prince Albert Raiders with the 49th overall pick. Myhre had 46 points, including 17 goals, in just 29 games for the North East Wolfpack. Myhre also played a pair of games with the Prince Albert Mintos, notching one assist.

Humboldt’s Preston Hoppe was taken in the sixth round, 115th overall by the Moose Jaw Warriors. The right-winger had 75 points in just 28 games with the Humboldt U15 AA Broncos this past season and added 21 points in eight playoff games. He also appeared in four games in the SMAAAHL with the Tisdale Trojans.

Defenseman Marek McIvor, a Davidson native who played for the Humboldt U15 AA Broncos last season, was taken 163rd overall by the Kelowna Rockets. He potted 29 points in 22 regular season games, and nine points in seven playoff contests.

Landon DuPont of Calgary was taken first overall by Everett. The top three picks of the draft were defensemen.
