Another Weekend Split

Mustangs use big second period to bounce back against Bombers

Oct 13, 2024 | 11:24 AM

Following a 6-3 loss in Flon Flon on Friday, the Melfort Mustangs responded in a big way a day later.

The Mustangs welcomed the Bombers to town Saturday night for the second game of a back-to-back, home-and-home set.

Just like they did on Friday, the Stangs opened the scoring in the first period, this time courtesy of Reilley Kotai.

Kotai’s fourth of the season, three of which have come in his last trio of games, was on the powerplay as assistant captains Logan Belton and Nic Andrusiak picked up the assists.

The Blue and Green would hold on to the lead, this time around, only adding to it in the middle frame.

After the 1-0 lead heading into the second, it was Belton who would find the back of the net on the man advantage, as he, Kotai and Andrusiak combined for the marker yet again.

Jake Giacobbo picked up his second goal of the season, just 35 seconds later, as Tristin Ziola and Owen Nelson grabbed their first points on the year with the assists.

Kaleb Binner then scored for the second night in a row, just minutes before the period expired, as Andrusiak produced his third assist on the night, with Nolan Patterson also registering a helper, his first point on the year.

A 4-0 lead after 40 minutes was more than enough for the Mustangs, as the Bombers only scored once in the final 20 minutes, to end the game with a 4-1 score.

Melfort now holds a 6 and 2 record through the first four weekends of the season, tied for the best record in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) with the Yorkton Terriers.

The Stangs, who have now split their last two weekends, both of which have been home-and-home sets, will be off until Friday when they play host to the Kindersley Klippers.

Puck drop for that matchup is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace
