Red hot Wings humble Hawks

Wednesday at the ‘Cage’ in Nipawin was a night the Hawks would like to forget as Weyburn routed them 9-1 to extend their winning streak to a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season high five games.

The Red Wings started the winning streak on Oct. 5 with a victory over the Hawks in Weyburn, Nipawin had lost their previous three games, but Nipawin did earn a point in an overtime loss to La Ronge.

Over Weyburn’s impressive stretch, the club has scored 25 goals, and the offensive onslaught continued much to the dismay of Head Coach Tad Kozun who admittedaa at their rebuilt roster will have some long nights, but results like these can’t occur.

“Just not a good effort on our part,” he said after the game. “We have to reflect on it here tonight and get back to work tomorrow because we have to hit the ice Friday in La Ronge and we have to be much better.”

Weyburn opened the scoring about halfway through the first, the second goal appeared no where near crossing the goal line behind Gage Roberts in the Nipawin net, but the official saw differently putting the Red Wings up 2-0 in the first. They added three more in the second and another four in the final frame. Nipawin captain Finley Radloff snapped Dazza Mitchell’s shutout bid with his third goal of the season. Kozun took the blame after the game and said he needs to have his players more prepared.

“It has to start with myself, we have to hold ourselves accountable, we have to make sure we are ready to play and be ready for every challenge that comes our way,” he said.

The Hawks now sit with just one win in the first 10 games of the season, their three points have them last in the league standings. Going into the season Nipawin had just one 20-year-old player on the roster, with Vito Biondo returning foe his third year that number doubled. Kozun said the excuse of being young on paper is tiring.

“We’re 10 games into the year now, we can sit here and say we’re inexperienced and all that kind of stuff, but I am not one to make excuses. We just flat out have to be better,” he concluded.

Roberts suffered the loss in goal giving up six on 31 shots, Corben Schnurr made nine saves on 12 shots in relief.

The Hawks are in La Ronge Friday for the third meeting of the year with the Ice Wolves and first on the road. Puck drop is 7:30 p.m., the pregame show of Nipawin Chrysler Dodge Hawks Hockey on 750 Beach Radio will begin at 7:15 p.m.
