Snowfall to continue through Tuesday across northeast Sask.

The first snowfall of the season has been a significant one – and we’re not done yet.

While areas like Saskatoon and Regina are reporting around five to 10 cm of snow, the eastern part of the province has seen triple that in some places, and more.

Christy Climenhaga of Environment and Climate Change Canada told northeastNOW it’s all part of a significant weather system from the United States that is hitting eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba especially hard.

“That bullseye (is) in that east-central and northeastern part of Saskatchewan,” said Climenhaga.

The system is expected to continue to dump snow across much of the province throughout Saskatchewan for the rest of Tuesday, with as much as five to 15 cm of snow or more in localized areas. The snow is expected to taper off after tonight.

“Through the day tomorrow you’ll start to see relief from that, in terms of that snow falling.”

Making snow clearing more challenging for residents and plows alike is the strong wind. Climenhaga said the wind is coming from the north and will gust to about 60 km/h at times through the rest of the day.

“With all of that fallen snow, low visibility is something that we are going to be watching for the next about 24 hours,” said Climenhaga. “As we move into the day tomorrow, we start to see things easing up a little bit.”

Climenhaga said the reduced visibility could be something that affects travel for the next day or so. She recommends budgeting extra time if you need to travel as conditions may not be ideal for a while due to blowing and drifting snow and potential icy patches.

Cooler weather will be a fixture for the near future after the system passes. Climenhaga said another system will come through the province moving through on the weekend, bringing some snow and below seasonal temperatures.

The snow has led to several postponements and other changes.

The Melfort Mustangs game in Yorkton and the Nipawin Hawks home game against the Battlefords North Stars that were slated for Tuesday night have both been postponed.

Melfort restaurants RR & 3 A’s Cafe and TJ’s Pizza are both closed due to the weather conditions.

Other events like the Rotary Club of Melfort meeting and the Marguerite Riel gym night have been cancelled.
