Eight in a row?

Mustangs going for season sweep over Bruins

Dec 4, 2024 | 4:06 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will welcome the Estevan Bruins to the Northern Lights Palace tonight, as they go for their eighth straight victory.

Wednesday’s game will be the fourth and final matchup between the two clubs, already this regular season.

“It’s nice to get a season series over with, this early in the season, so we just hope we can get another win here tonight and earn the sweep,” said Mustangs’ forward Tristin Ziola.

“We just want to work hard, use our speed, keep our flow going down low and be really good in the defensive zone. I think if we do all that tonight then we’ll be good.”

Melfort and Estevan have played to three one-goal contests this year, of which the Bruins have fallen short every time.

The Stangs hope one of those streaks continue tonight, however, believe they can win more handily on Wednesday, especially coming off their best performance of the year on Friday, exploding on offence in an 8-1 rout over the Battlefords North Stars.

“We just got to keep buzzing, keep using our speed and strength, and keep working in the ozone and making plays… we think that should keep going and if it does, then we can stick to what we did on Friday and beat them pretty bad tonight,” Ziola added.

The league-best Blue and Green will be without Rylan Ringor on their second line tonight and for the rest of the way as they announced a trade earlier today that will send him back to the MJHL (Manitoba Junior Hockey League).

In exchange for Ringor, who last played in Manitoba in 2022 and had eight points in nine games for Melfort this year, the Mustangs will receive Ashton Paul.

Ringor will go to the Dauphin Kings while Paul will return to the SJHL.

Paul had 19 points in 28 games to begin the year with the Flin Flon Bombers last season, before spending the past 52 games of his career with Dauphin, accumulating 46 points in his time as a King.

Both Paul and Ringor are 2004-born forwards.

Puck drop between the Melfort Mustangs and the Estevan Bruins tonight is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
