Melfort, Tisdale residents reminded to renew pet licenses for 2025

Jan 8, 2025 | 3:31 PM

Pet owners are being reminded to renew their licenses for 2025.

Melfort pet parents can purchase dog and cat licenses at City Hall or online through the city’s website.

Director of Public Works Kalyna Cipywnyk told northeastNOW the cost to purchase a license depends on whether they have been spayed or neutered.

“Dog and cat licenses are currently $34.10 for non-spayed or neutered animals,” Cipywnyk explained. “If the owner provides a certificate from a certified veterinarian stating the animal has been spayed or neutered, then the cost of the license is reduced to $12.10.”

Fees are subject to change upon approval of the City’s Fees and Charges Bylaw.

According to Cipywnyk, there are several reasons to license your pet. The City of Melfort requires all cats and dogs to be licensed, and licensing can also help owners avoid fines and impoundment charges. A licensed animal is also easier to be able to return to its owner.

In Melfort, the first violation of the Dog Bylaw is $50, the second violation in the same year is $125, and the third or subsequent violations is $250. It’s the same story for cats, though the fourth or subsequent offenses within a year in the cats’ case could lead to a maximum fine of $10,000 in the case of an individual, and $25,000 in the case of a corporation.

Both cats and dogs cannot run at large within the City of Melfort. There is also a limit to the number of each an owner can have. Residents can only have up to four cats in one location, and three dogs in one location.

The City of Melfort Noise Bylaw also states that homeowners cannot allow dogs to bark or howl excessively. Also, if a dog or cat defecates on someone else’s property, the owner of the pet is responsible for removing the waste.

The Town of Tisdale is also reminding residents to renew their dog licenses. Owners must obtain a dog license in Tisdale before Jan. 31, as it is an offense to own a dog without one.
