Snow, wind causing significant travel challenges across northeast

Jan 17, 2025 | 10:25 AM

While some parts of the region didn’t get the amount of snow that was in the forecast, that doesn’t mean travel conditions weren’t affected.

A serious collision on Highway 41 south of Aberdeen briefly closed the road in both directions earlier this morning, but the Highway Hotline update revealed the highway is no longer closed.

A social media post from Skilled Truckers Canada yesterday at about 6 pm showed a petroleum truck that hit the ditch on Highway 6, south of Naicam.

The Nipawin Fire Department’s social media page showed a semi that got stuck in Nipawin this morning and blocked both lanes of traffic in front of the Salvation Army intersection of Railway Ave. and 8th St.

Travel is still not recommended in the Nipawin and Carrot River areas after they received much more snow than the Melfort region, while the North East School Division had a multitude of bus cancellations for the morning due to weather conditions.

RCMP issued an advisory this morning that “winter weather is impacting road conditions throughout the province.”

According to the RCMP, snow-covered lanes, drifting and blowing snow, strong winds, and even road closures or detours have been reported to them thanks to the Alberta Clipper that has passed through Saskatchewan.

Conditions are expected to improve, though colder weather will replace the wind and snow.
