Suncrest College in Melfort tweaks CCA program

Jan 21, 2025 | 3:52 PM

The Continuing Care Assistant (CCA) program at Suncrest College in Melfort is undergoing a bit of a facelift.

The new program that will debut in August will allow students a chance to find employment while they learn.

Students will spend three days in a classroom per week, and a Suncrest news release said the program “will create new pathways for students to secure employment with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).”

Students can currently work with the SHA while studying in the program, but Suncrest said program scheduling often prevents working students from completing the CCA program within a year.

“At Suncrest College, we are dedicated to supporting our industries and creating opportunities for our students. This program is designed to make education more accessible and help students build successful careers in healthcare,” Teri Thompson, Vice President of Academics and Learner Engagement at Suncrest College, said in the news release.

The release states the CCA program grads will be needed in long-term care homes, home care, and acute care facilities in the future, and the grads will have an opportunity to grow with the SHA with the opportunities.

“Student opportunities like this are vital to addressing the regional needs of the SHA by providing education and staffing supports. Responsive programming allows us to ensure students are supporting the workforce needs of our communities,” Thompson added.

The course will run from Aug. 2025 to June 2026, and applications are now being accepted.
