Council approves plan to expand daycare in Lanigan

The town of Lanigan has approved a daycare expansion program in the community.

Council passed a resolution this week to approve an agreement in principle with the Lanigan Daycare Cooperative to build a new daycare facility in Lanigan.

Lanigan Daycare Cooperative currently operates a 48-space daycare facility, and they have been approved for a 90-space facility.

Mayor Tony Mycock said daycare is vital to support the growth of the community and without daycare, they cannot grow.

“More available daycare spaces in Lanigan will help improve our labour market as more adults with young children will be available to fill jobs,” explained Mycock in a news release.

Mycock said there have been people who have wanted to move to Lanigan but decided against it due to the lack of daycare spaces.

“As council, we are happy to partner with the daycare board to help see this much needed facility come to fruition. We see this as a win-win for all of us.”

Katelynn Psovsky of Lanigan Daycare Cooperative said the existing facility is tired and operating at full capacity with an ever-growing waitlist.

“We are excited to partner with the Town of Lanigan to build a new 90-space facility that is able to meet the needs of our growing community,” said Psovsky.

BHP provided a $40,000 grant to the Cooperative to develop a business plan for the project, which has been under review since last summer. The project is expected to cost around $3 million, with a one-time provincial capital grant of nearly $600,000 available to help with the project. That and the sale of the existing daycare facility and a Lanigan Daycare contribution are expected to contribute about $1 million toward the project.

Financing for the remainder will be arranged by the Town of Lanigan, with the Lanigan Daycare Cooperative making finance payments to the town. The news release said there will be no property tax impact on residents and businesses in the community.

“The town will coordinate the development of an RFP (Request for Proposal) process for a design/build approach and a small committee of representatives from the Town Council and Daycare Board will assist with guidance throughout the project,” the release said.

The new daycare will be located on the former swimming pool site, with demolition of the pool and buildings on-site to take place in April.

Construction on the daycare project is expected to start in June, with the daycare to open in June of 2026.
