Another powerplay surge?

Mustangs search for season-series victory in final meeting with Red Wings

Feb 13, 2025 | 1:00 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will welcome the Weyburn Red Wings to the Northern Lights Palace on Thursday night for the fourth and final meeting of the season.

Melfort leads the season series two games to one, having defeated Weyburn last week, courtesy of five powerplay goals.

“I sure hope we can score five powerplay goals again, we worked on it in practice yesterday and we feel like it’s clicking,” said Mustangs’ forward Zayden Sadlemyer.

“We feel it’s super important to win tonight because it’s really nice to have that season series win, especially over a good team. We want to keep far ahead of them and try and push them down the standings.”

The Stangs are coming off a tremendous past week, which included that 5-2 win over the Red Wings, as they went 4-0 in just five days.

Having gotten a bit of rest over the weekend, which included watching Sunday’s Super Bowl together, the group is now ready to get back on the ice.

“We’ll have to move pucks quickly because they’re a fast and hard team that comes at you with lots of speed. We’re gonna have to get speed through the neutral zone and get pucks deep behind their defence,” Sadlemyer added.

“They’re really good at forcing pressure, and we did capitalize on our powerplay last time but their penalty kill really presses you, so when we snap it around, that’s when we have success.”

Tonight’s contest will begin with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop.
