Unity in the Community coming to Hudson Bay Saturday

Feb 28, 2025 | 11:22 AM

An event in Hudson Bay that celebrates culture and togetherness.

Hudson Bay Metis Local 114 is hosting their second annual Unity in the Community Gathering on Saturday at Brooks Hall.

Local president Marilyn Ekert told northeastNOW said they were able to obtain a Community Enrichment grant through Metis Nation of Saskatchewan to hold the event.

“It’s directed towards our youth, that’s what the day is about, is celebrating our youth and exposing them to what the community has to offer,” explained Ekert.

The opening ceremony will feature the RCMP, a conservation officer, Highway Patrol, the local Member of Parliament Cathay Wagantall, the mayor, representatives from the school and the local RMs, and more. Ekert said many of them are also helping throughout the event, including cleanup.

The event will also feature cultural food and displays from Ukraine, Portugal, the Philippines, Metis, and First Nations. Ekert said the various cultures will have displays at their tables along with various foods.

“They are ready to answer any questions,” said Ekert, who encourages the youth to take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the various cultures that make up the region.

Representatives from the local museum will be on hand with some kids’ games and cultural colouring pages. Metis elders will also be in attendance, and Ekert said it’s a way to help expose children to various cultures and help them learn about them.

The Hudson Bay Ukrainian Dance Group, Creeland Dancers, and Porcupine Plain Filipino Dance Groups will entertain the crowd with performances, with the Creeland Dancers also offering a workshop. The Dean Smith Band will be playing throughout the day.

Unity in the Community is free of charge, and doors open at 11 am on Saturday.
