Hawks and Bombers battle for final time Tuesday
The Flin Flon Bombers will make their last visit of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season to Nipawin Tuesday.
Meeting for the eighth and final time, the Hawks will seek their second straight win against the Bombers after picking up a 3-0 win over Flin Flon on Feb. 4. The victory snapped the Nipawin’s 17-game losing streak against their division foes and it upset the Bombers’ 26 game point streak at the time. Nipawin Head Coach Tad Kozun said that win stands out as a highlight for the season.
“When you look back on this year that hasn’t gone exactly as we planned, the shut out win at home over Flin Flon, breaking their streak and ours, was a night we will look back on with positivity for sure. We had just turned a corner around the start of February and that night grew our group immensely and we’ve continued to build since then,” Kozun said.
Overall Nipawin’s struggles with Flin Flon have persisted this season, the 3-0 blanking in February was the Hawks lone win this season against the three-time SJHL finalists. Flin Flon looks poised to take another swing at their first title since 1993, the Hawks will miss the playoffs for the second straight season. Kozun said the Bombers will likely want some revenge despite the game meaning nothing in the standings.
