Update: special air quality statement lifted

May 9, 2025 | 1:24 PM

UPDATE: The special air quality statement issued by Environment Canada has been lifted. Original story below:

Much of northeast and east-central Saskatchewan could see some smoke over the next day or so.

Environment Canada has issued a Special Air Quality Statement for areas including Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin, Hudson Bay, and Kelvington.

“Smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility,” the statement read.

The smoke and subsequent poor air quality is due to wildfires in northern Saskatchewan and northern Manitoba.

“You may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough,” according to Environment Canada. “More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough.”

People with existing illness or chronic health conditions are recommended to reduce outdoor activities when smoke becomes an issue.

“Please call HealthLine 811 for advice on health risks, symptoms and precautions associated with air quality,” the statement said.

Smoky conditions are expected to persist through the night.
