Former Sask. Party MLA and cabinet minister Herb Cox passed away

The flags were lowered to half-staff at the legislative building on Tuesday at the news of the death of former MLA and cabinet minister Herb Cox.

Cox was first elected as the Sask. Party MLA for Battlefords in 2011 and was re-elected in 2016. He chose not to run again in 2020.

Cox’s tenure was punctuated by health struggles. In 2012, he was diagnosed with bone cancer. In 2016, he was Environment Minister but left Cabinet to undergo stem cell treatment to battle cancer again.

“I have gone through this treatment once before a few years back and I know it would make it extremely difficult to continue to perform my duties as a cabinet minister,” Cox said in a news release at the time.

In 2016, then-Premier Brad Wall praised Cox’s work at the cabinet table, saying he would be missed.

“Herb Cox has done a good job managing a number of important environmental files, up to and including our government’s ongoing response to the Husky oil spill,” he said in a news release.

On social media Tuesday, Premier Scott Moe said Cox was “without a doubt” worthy of the Honourable title given to a minister.

“He served his community and his province with honour and dedication,” wrote Moe.

Former Saskatoon Southeast MLA Don Morgan offered his condolences as well.

“He was a good friend and colleague. And I used to enjoy needling him because he was one of the very few people who was actually older than me. He will be missed. Sympathies and prayers to his friends and family,” he wrote on social media.
