Mustangs hope to solve rival Hawks amidst three-game skid

Nov 28, 2025 | 3:14 PM

Prior to late Wednesday night, it had been more than three years since the Melfort Mustangs were multiple games below .500.

With their loss to the Weyburn Red Wings two nights ago, however, it dropped the Mustangs to an 8-10-2 record, as their losing streak is now at three games.

Melfort will be in tough to end said slide, and try to climb back closer to an even win/loss split, when they host their most bitter rivals, the Nipawin Hawks, on Friday night.

The Stangs are 0 and 2 against the Hawks this season, most recently being shut out in Nipawin, 3-0, on Nov. 14.

Meanwhile, in the two clubs only meeting at the Northern Lights Palace this year, it was a Hawks’ two-goal third period comeback, which fueled a 4-3 Nipawin win in the Sept. 19 season opener.

The Blue and Green were last below .500 by two games on Oct. 21 of 2022, ahead of a two-game homestand against the Estevan Bruins, sitting at 4-6-4, before going on to win both.

While Melfort won’t see the same team at home twice this weekend, they are two games into a five-game homestand, so the hope is that they can replicate the same type of success on their home turf.

The Mustangs are currently in 10th place in the SJHL standings, 20 games into this 2025/26 campaign, as they sit seven points behind the Yorkton Terriers for the final playoff spot.

The Stangs’ defence has been top-four in the league to this point, as they’ve given up just 67 goals. The issue is that they’ve scored the second-fewest amount of goals, with just 58.

Another facet of the game that has hindered the Blue and Green’s success is that their power play percentage currently ranks bottom five, and their penalty kill percentage is bottom three.

Melfort, who is 3-6-0-1 in their past 10, will play in front of extra family and friends this weekend, as the organization hosts their annual parent-billet weekend.

Festivities will include the debut of the team’s third jerseys, which will be auctioned off during intermissions, as well as the annual Teddy Bear Toss and Calcutta Shootout.

Nipawin, meanwhile, are 6-3-1 in their previous 10 contests and are riding a three-game win streak, as they sit in fourth place in the league standings, while holding the second-best win percentage.

The Mustangs and the Hawks will see one another for just the third of eight scheduled meetings this year tonight, with puck drop scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
