Mustangs extend point streak to five with shootout win in Melville

Jan 25, 2026 | 1:36 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are far from down and out, as they stretched their point streak to five games on Saturday.

Melfort visited Melville, needing extra time to take down the Millionaires, as forward Kaleb Binner scored the shootout winner to win it 3-2.

Binner scored the first goal for the Mustangs after they were down 2-0, and assisted on the equalizer in the third, prior to his shootout winner to solidify a highlight night.

The Stangs seemed destined to, despite the early deficit, as they controlled a majority of the game, especially in the second half.

The Blue and Green outshot the Mills 32-8 in the second and third periods combined, before scoring the only goal of the shootout.

“We didn’t necessarily come out real hard, but I think towards the end of the second half of the second period, and then especially in the third period, we turned it on. It felt like our guys were sticking with it and couldn’t be denied in this one, so it was good to see them get rewarded,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

The victory for Melfort avenged their 1-0 overtime loss against Melville on Wednesday, also helping them avoid the season sweep.

With Kindersley’s comeback win over the Yorkton Terriers, the Mustangs kept pace with the Klippers, as they remain seven points back of a playoff spot.

The Stangs will next play on Tuesday, as they search for continuous points, when they visit the Battlefords North Stars.
