Hawks sign 2024 first round draft pick

The Nipawin Hawks announced they have signed Jeremy Wehrens to a Letter of Intent for next years Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season.

Wehrens, 17, was the Hawks first pick in the SJHL Under-16 Draft in 2024 from the Saskatoon Blazers U18 AAA program. On Jan. 23 during the Hawks game in Warman, the Saskatoon product signed with the club. Wehrens said he has been excited for this opportunity since Nipawin selected him.

“I was excited to go to Nipawin,” he said. “I had a very good camp there and they seemed interested in me. I was excited to go to a program with Tad [Kozun] as a coach, he has been there awhile. It’s just a great organization all around.”

This year Wehrens has scored 14 goals in 35 games for the Blazers. Last year he accumulated 15 goals in 44 regular season games. The six-foot, 170-pound forward will join a deep Hawks group next season. Wehrens said he knows the team looks set for the next few seasons.

“It’s a solid group. I saw their roster in camp, and wow. Lots of youngsters and they are good,” he said.

Wehrens will continue his final U18 season and hopes for a long run with the Blazers.

Nipawin Associate General Manager Dana Dirks said Wehrens development since being drafted is what the scouting staff predicted.

“When we drafted Jeremy in the first round, we saw his raw potential. Over the last two years, he has developed into the player we thought he would become. At the Saskatchewan Hockey Classic over Christmas, Jeremy was named to the All-Star Team and led the tournament in goals with seven, helping the Blazers take the championship. We are very excited to have Jeremy and his family on board with the Hawks next season.”

The Hawks host Flin Flon on Tuesday at the Centennial Arena in their next action.
