The Nipawin Evergreen Golf Course has announced Steve Ryde as their new head professional.

Ryde, 47, started his golf journey on the sand green courses of Eston, Sask. before attending Lethbridge College’s golf management course. He became a professional in 2001. Ryde’s golf career has taken him from his hometown to Kananaskis, B.C., North Battleford, the Northwest Territory, and most recently, Saskatoon. He said replacing Derrick Tallon is an honour.

“I am an outdoorsy guy, I love coming to the golf course every day,” he said. “It’s a really great fit for my family, and it’s really exciting.“

Ryde also spent five years as the tournament director and manager of sport for Golf Saskatchewan, the governing body of amateur golf in the province before returning to a role at the Willows Club and Clubhouse Golf Academy. He said he’s been interested in the head professional position ever since Evergreen hosted the 2019 Saskatchewan Junior Championships.

“Ever since then, I have kept my eye on it. 2026 has provided some opportunities, but this one…I think I hit the jackpot,” he said.

Ryde has already started in the position and was in Nipawin this week meeting with Tallon and chatting with current staff from the year prior. He said it’s an exciting time for him and his wife Brynn, and he can’t wait to start once the snow melts with some big events coming to the club.

“The MNP Northeast Open is always a big one at the start of the year. It’s always fun to see pros and amateurs, truly the best field. The PGA of Saskatchewan Championship, really honoured to host all the pros from Saskatchewan. Hopefully we get a great turnout and support from the community,” he added

The opening date of the Evergreen is weather dependent, but usually by May long weekend northern courses are open.
