Slow start grounds Hawks in Flin Flon

The Hawks pushed the pace against the Bombers over two periods Tuesday, unfortunately for Nipawin they spotted Flin Flon a 3-0 lead and never recovered falling for the 14th straight game at the Whitney Forum.

Hunting their first win in Manitoba since Feb. 15, 2022, the Hawks gave up three first period goals and headed to the first intermission.

Breaden Jockims got Nipawin on the board early in the second period with his 16th goal of the year. The 20-year-old from Saskatoon, Sask. has a seven game goal streak with nine goals over that stretch. Eric Hoiness added his 17th of the year early in the third period drawing the Hawks to within one.

The Hawks gave up the insurance marker halfway through the third period and could not find the equalizer. Head Coach Tad Kozun said on the postgame show on 750 Beach Radio that there were lots to like from his team, but you can’t get behind against the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) top team.

“You can’t give them a three goal lead, especially in a place they play well at. It’s a hard place to come back in,” he said.

Nipawin outshot the Bombers over the final 40 minutes but were bombarded 17-6 in the opening stanza. Kozun said there was chances to draw even before the Bombers extended the two goal cushion.

“Janny [Jack Janzen] missed that wraparound by an inch with the goal out of the net and they come score another one next shift, but you just can’t start like that. We had our chances for the equalizer but tonight it didn’t go.” Kozun added.

Nipawin returned home still tied with Yorkton for third place, but the Terriers have played three less games. La Ronge is in Yorkton Wednesday.

The Hawks will travel to Yorkton on Friday.
